“Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
Jeremiah 23:29
When you think of God’s Word, do you consider it to be like fire?
Well, if God said His Word is like fire in this verse, I believe it… and we ought to think about it together.
What is fire?
Fire is defined as “the phenomenon of combustion manifested in light, flame, and heat.”
Whenever you’ve interacted with fire you probably noticed three things:
it’s bright, it’s hot, and it burns…
Just like the Word of God.
The Brightness. Just as a fiery torch brings bright light to a deep, dark cave, the Scriptures bring bright light to a dark soul.
Have you ever opened the Psalms and read them aloud during despairing, discouraging, or depressing times?
At times I have battled depression and travailed in prayer, yet upon reading aloud the Psalms of David my heart was encouraged, my faith was restored, and my day was brightened by those scriptural rays of hope. My praise came back.
The Heat. Fire is hot. Have you ever gathered around a fire on a chilly autumn evening?
The heat of a fire is attractive to those who are cold. The Word of God “brings the heat” to a sinner that is cold and dead.
It is often a fiery message of God’s judgment and the fires of hell that gets the lost sinner’s attention.
And when a sinner is saved from a fiery eternity in hell, he is forever held in the warm embrace of our Heavenly Father.
The Burn. Fire burns. There is nothing that is unaffected by fire. The hardest and most durable elements, when dropped into the sun, will be forever changed.
God’s Word, received into the center of a cold, lost soul, will forever change someone into a new creation.
If you read and meditate on the truths of scripture, they will burn out the lies of the world, the lies of your selfish flesh, and the lies of the devil. Read God’s Word and light His torch in your soul.
“But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones…”
Jeremiah 20:9
Embrace the Word of God. It’s the only fire that we can safely embrace.
Keep your armor on.
