Memorial Day Thoughts

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.”- George S. Patton

The picture is simple. An American flag planted beside a grave marker on manicured grass. It’s quite a peaceful scene, devoid of the bullets, bombs, and violence of war.

The soldiers below the ground are the reason for peace above ground.

I’ve never served in uniform and never experienced war, I’ve only ever known peace. The soldiers below ground experienced the worst aspects of humanity, and suffered a violent end.

I agree with General Patton. We should thank God that such men lived and served our nation. I know that such soldiers are in uniform today, but I’m not sure that our entitled, selfish, offended society is fostering such bravery and courage.

Brave soldiers gave their lives in war so that we could experience peace in this world.

Jesus Christ gave His life for the sins of the world, so that we who believe in Him could experience peace for all of eternity.

His grave has no American flag planted over it. There is no white grave marker listing His name and military unit. There is also no manicured grass surrounding His grave. Most importantly, there is no body in the ground where they laid Him to rest.

The tomb is empty. The Lord has risen. He secured peace for all eternity for those who would come to Him for salvation.

The American soldiers who have fallen were only able to secure a temporary peace for my nation, and others must summon bravery and fill in the ranks behind them to stand against tyranny and evil.

This Memorial Day, I’m thankful for Christ Jesus and our fallen soldiers. Both went to war to secure peace for humanity.

Pray for our active duty soldiers, that they would come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. I can’t imagine a soldier who would give their life for their nation, only to spend eternity separated from God…but I’m sure it happens.

Keep your prayers up for America. She is in desperate need of courageous Christian soldiers, both in and out of uniform.

Keep your armor on.
