God: Man’s Greatest Refuge

“The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.”

Psalm 9:9-10

We hear a lot about “refugees” these days. Wars, natural disasters, and political corruption drive people from their homelands to seek refuge in other areas where they can find safety and shelter.

What drives us to God for His safety and shelter?

According to the Psalmist in this passage, there are two driving factors which cause us to run to the Lord for protection and safety.

#1 – Trouble

These are the things that disrupt your plans and your schedule. It can be bad news when you were having a good day, or bad news piled onto an already hard day.

“Troubling” means taking a calm situation and stirring or shaking it up. We’ve all been there in life.

God is our refuge in those times.

Please don’t forget that.

If you’re not already in the midst of trouble, be sure that trouble is down the road waiting to disrupt an otherwise calm scenario.

When that happens, God will still be your greatest refuge. Keep in mind that He allows trouble in your life to refine you like silver and mold you like clay.

He can, and will, cover our hearts with His peace, and comfort our minds with His Word just when we need Him.

#2 – Oppression

This is a situation where you’re being pushed down by an outside force. This can make you feel like you’re dealing with the weight of the world by yourself.

What causes oppression? Persecution by others because of your faith, spiritual attacks against your mind by the devil, and an overreaching negative authority in your life such as government, to name a few.

Oppression can often lead to anxiety, panic attacks, worry, bewilderment, and other manifestations of fear in your life.

Whether you face minor troubles or major oppression today, there is a loving God who is a strong, safe shelter just for you.

When you watch a severe thunderstorm from the safety of your house, you’re protected from the fierce rain, hail, wind, and lightning.

That’s the kind of protection God offers to those who trust in Him. If you trust in Him, He will never leave or forsake you. He’ll keep you through the storm. You’re loved.

Keep your armor on.
