A Call to Plow

“And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:62

I remember when I was young and Dad taught me to use the rototiller for the first time. It was loud, a bit smoky, and POWERFUL, thanks to its 8hp Tecumseh small engine.

I think it had two speeds:

1) “Crawling Churn”

2) “Bucking Bronco”

Our garden seemed to grow rocks year after year. You haven’t really lived until you’ve rototilled a rock the size of a large sneaker in 2nd gear…hence the name “Bucking Bronco”.

Plowing isn’t just walking behind a machine while it does the work.

– It involves maintaining strong downward pressure to keep the tines engaged at a consistent depth.

– It entails walking through loose, clumpy, and uneven ground. You get real dirty plowing the ground.

– It requires watching for obstacles and dangers.

– It requires a listening ear in case the machine has a mechanical issue, or the tines run into a snag.

In other words, whether it’s old fashioned plowing with a mule and a plow, or modern day plowing with a Toro rototiller, these things remain constant:

You must stay focused on the path ahead in order to travel a straight line, and you must be consistently engaged in the work.

Just like our Christian walk.

Jesus said that once our hands grip that plow, our walk (and work) for Him begins and never ends.

Looking back will only ruin our focus, cause us to stumble, and make our furrows crooked.

If you intend to walk with God, then commit 100% to Him.

After all, look at the 100% effort that Jesus Christ gave us at Calvary. He’s worth our best plowing effort.

There’s no turning back.

Keep your furrows straight.

Onward Christian soldier.

Keep your armor on.
