The Devil is a Conman Selling Garbage

“Neither give place to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:27

Have you ever been conned?
You have. So have I.

Maybe you weren’t literally “sold a bill of goods”, but you’ve stepped into the snare of temptation because the devil is a great salesman.

I’m not a very good salesman.
A dozen years ago I suffered through two days as a door-to-door salesman, and I have no desire to ever try that again.

But I did learn some things.
(Always try to learn something even if your task is unappealing.)

One thing I learned is that you must KNOW and (if you’re honest) BELIEVE IN your product.
This small company gave me boxed kits filled with cheap, energy-efficient water fixtures and light bulbs.
The kit was free to the homeowner as long as I could talk my way into the house to install three pieces of the kit.

If I did manage to talk my way inside, the homeowner had to agree to schedule a free home inspection to highlight areas in their home that were energy inefficient. There were contractors on standby to begin repairs/upgrades that would increase energy efficiency in their home.

“What’s in the kit?” The elderly lady looked at me suspiciously from behind her half-open door.

A bunch of junk that you should avoid at all costs, I didn’t say.

What kind of junk, you ask?

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs with horrible white light reminiscent of the dentist office…a reminder to get their 6-month cleaning and checkup?
  • A low-flow shower head that would probably leave them soapy and sad with perpetually flat hair.
  • Low-flow faucet aerators that would turn their evening dishwashing into a career.

My feelings must have been written on my face because most people weren’t buying it.
They had nice, newer houses in nice neighborhoods, and I show up with little boxes of trinkets to install in their homes.

The devil shows up with sin to sell you, and believe me, he knows his product inside and out.
He tells you confidently that you NEED that profanity, lust, addiction, anger, etc.

First, he presents the sin, then he TELLS you about it.
“This sin is going to make things sooo much BETTER for you.”

Wrong.
The wages of sin is still corruption and death. (Romans 6:23)
You have so much to lose when you allow that slick, creepy snake into your life to install sin into your heart.

He’s an excellent salesman.
You’re no match for his wiles. Just remember you don’t need any of the garbage he’s trying to sell you today.

Keep your armor on.
