Keep Satan out of Your House

“Neither give place to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:27

When I was working as a door-to-door salesman, I had to learn to carry myself and my “kit” a certain way.
Phonies are usually pretty easy to spot…and so are rookie salesmen, like I was.

I still remember my first day ever knocking doors in a neighborhood.
I had to knock each door because my livelihood depended on getting inside and installing cheap, energy efficient light bulbs, shower heads, and sink aerators.
It was the first step toward a free home inspection and possible energy efficient updates for the homeowner.

I was a nervous mess as I walked, rehearsing my lines with this slippery white box of junk, a clipboard, and a name tag. I also carried (3) sections of pipe insulation. They were basically three-foot long pool noodles.

Rookie salesmen may get nervous, but did you know that the devil and his demonic hordes aren’t nervous when they come to tempt you?
They just aim fiery darts at your mind and launch them, usually at very specific moments when you’re most vulnerable to being swayed into sin.

It’s warfare, remember?
(Ephesians 6:12)

Satan isn’t wandering around looking to install some cheap fixtures in your life, just trying to make a buck like I was…he’s actually looking to infiltrate your life and devour your God-given potential…and worse. (1 Peter 5:8)

When I knocked on that first door my mind went blank.
What am I going to say?!
How did I get myself into this?!

A very large, muscular guy ripped open the door, looking very annoyed. I think he’d been napping.
“Yeah?”

I launched into a jumbled mess of a sales pitch, fumbling with that slippery, white box of junk while trying to tame the pool noodles under my arm that were flapping everywhere.
When I was done I stared at him, my face sweating.

“Who are you with again?”
In my rush I had forgotten to introduce myself or even tell him who I was with. I held out my name tag for him to inspect…then I asked if I could begin again, knowing he was confused.

“Please do.”
I helped myself to his porch chair, dumping all my stuff into it and fumbling to open the box of cheap junk to win his heart over…in the process I managed to dump its contents all over his porch.

Long story short…
I didn’t win him over.
He wasn’t impressed and I wasn’t able to get into his house.
He didn’t want what I was offering.

Lesson learned…
Be the muscular Christian when Satan comes knocking to sell you some anger, addiction, apathy, hatred, fear, etc.

Turn him into a fumbling mess and resist him wholeheartedly.
Stand on the rock of Truth.
He will flee like I did that day.
(James 4:7)

Question: Is the devil comfy on the porch of your life, or do you offer resistance when he comes calling?
