The Fish and the Coin

“Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.”
Matthew 17:27

When I was young my friends and I would go fishing…a LOT.

Those were some of the best days of my life. We fished most of the lakes and rivers in northern Michigan.

The rivers were the best.
Standing on the riverbank, listening to the water, and laughing with friends…what could be better?

Catching fish!
I’d feel that tug on the line, give it a second, and then set the hook. I recall many times excitedly reeling in something…but that something was never a fish with coins in its mouth.

Jesus didn’t really perform this miracle “hands on”, but rather prophesied what was going to happen when Peter cast his hook in the water:

“There WILL be a fish.
It WILL bite the hook.
You WILL bring it in.
It WILL have money in its mouth.
You WILL be able to pay our taxes.”

Amazing!
Jesus could’ve done this with ALL of the disciples EVERYDAY…I’m sure they could have used the money.

So why didn’t Jesus make His people wealthy through miraculous means?

Because it’s more important that He give us what we NEED, and less important to get what we WANT.
Jesus is available to satisfy our soul and our spirit, but He didn’t come to satisfy our flesh.

He’ll give you what you need.
He may even provide for you using miraculous means and methods.
Trust Him for your needs.

Jesus Christ is an awesome Savior!
