Scars: Part One

“The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?”
Proverbs 18:14

Do you have any memorable scars on your body? I do.
Each scar of mine has a story behind it, and each one holds a painful memory.

My knee, elbow, and chin have scars from the same event: While cycling at high speed down a sidewalk I wiped out on a greasy pile of fish flies and landed in a bloody heap on the pavement. I still remember how that really hurt…and it was at least 15 years ago.

While mowing grass as a kid I ran over a pile of sticks and stones…they sprayed like a shotgun blast into my bare ankles and left me bloody. That really hurt…just the thought of it gives me chills 25 years later.

At four years old I was chasing my sister through the house. She ran through a doorway and slammed the door shut behind her…I ran into the doorknob as it closed, cutting my forehead open. I still have the scar 36 years later.

Fishing hooks through my knee scars, dozens of laceration scars, surgical scars…all that and more thus far in life, but I’m still here and healed up fine.

Look at your physical scars.
They tell a story of God’s healing power and His grace.
But emotional damage doesn’t heal like physical damage.

You can endure many physical injuries with pure grit and resolve.
But grit and resolve aren’t enough to handle severe emotional injuries…those are issues of the heart that require the Spirit of God for healing.

A gritty spirit can sustain a wounded body…but only God can heal a wounded spirit.

If you’ve grown weary tending your emotional wounds, the doctor is in the house…his name is Jesus Christ and He’s a prayer away.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

Who can bear a wounded spirit?
Jesus Christ will gladly shoulder your burden and work on your wounds.
He wants you to be whole again.
