“For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.”
Ecclesiastes 7:22
In a sinful world filled with 8 billion people, you’re bound to take a few “hard knocks” eventually…whether physical or verbal.
You’ve been insulted, offended, wounded, and scarred by people.
So have I.
Maybe you’ve been verbally assaulted or backstabbed.
It happens…sad but true.
But how many times have YOU taken the leash off of YOUR tongue and cut someone to ribbons with YOUR words?
Who have you wounded?
Who have you scarred?
I’ve damaged some people.
I’ve scarred some people.
I’ve asked God and other people to forgive me, but it’s still a terrible feeling to live with. I think I’d rather be verbally assaulted MYSELF, than live with the guilt of verbally wounding and scarring someone else for life.
This verse reminds me to be careful not to point fingers and hate people with my “loose lips”. My job is to guard my own mouth and not throw word daggers at people.
There are a million things happening in the world today which we can use to rationalize attacking people.
The alternative is to use that same aggressive energy to love others, show grace, forgive others, pray for others, and serve God.
“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
Colossians 4:6
Speak with grace and love.
Instead of “giving someone a piece of your mind”, try to give them “peace of mind with God’s grace.”
You’ll know it’s the wrong thing to say when the Holy Spirit is telling you not to say it.
“Lord, please warn me today when I’m about to say or do the wrong thing…and please give me the strength to resist the wrong and embrace the right. Help me to please you today with my words. Help me be a blessing to others with my speech and conduct. Amen.”
