Oh, deer…stay awake.

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
Matthew 25:13

Don’t get too comfy.

As I sat in the deer hunting blind in northern Michigan, that was my thought.

I was bundled up in multiple layers and had heavy boots on over my wool-socked feet. If I had to sit still for hours it might be boring, but at least I’d be warm.

Bundled so warm, and forced to sit relatively still, I began to get drowsy. The invigorating, 200-yard walk to the deer blind through fresh November air had become a sedative.

I began to doze.
I’d wake up periodically to check for deer but had assumed that none were coming.
After all, I heard nothing and I saw nothing in the quiet, still forest.
The last time I woke up the woods had become quite dark with the setting sun.

I scanned right. Nothing.
I scanned left. Nothing.

I looked straight ahead. Deer!
They had walked silently through crunchy leaves and now stood 15 yards away…SILENTLY on crunchy leaves!

This world can get mighty comfy as the Lord approaches. We wear ourselves out with the duties of life, and then plop down and wrap ourselves in creature comforts. It’s easy to get too tired to ponder, and prepare for, His return.

I get it. We’re all weak humans.
But don’t get so cozy that you forget that Christ is coming back, and this world is an hourglass with only so much sand left. Shake yourself awake often.

Jesus Christ is going to catch a lot of people sleeping when they should have been watching.
(He gave deer their ability to walk silently through crunchy leaves, so He knows something about stealth.)

Take a look around at the world.
We’re not in Kansas anymore.
Stay frosty and stay watching, saints.
