“And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.”
Nehemiah 4:16
Task oriented and ready for war…
at the same time.
If you’re a Christian and you’re reading this, God has called you to do (at least) two things together in your life:
#1 – Work for Him
“Therefore my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:58
#2 – Watch for enemy action
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:”
1 Peter 5:8
Some Christians are so task oriented that they lose sight of spiritual warfare.
They are so committed to their duty that they don’t notice enemy actions lining up against them…action which is intended to ruin their testimony and service to God.
As a result, they shrug in disbelief when an attack hits their life, oblivious to the fact that they’ve been targeted.
Other Christians are hyper focused on warfare. Everything bad points back to the devil, and they spend their days rebuking every raindrop, snowflake, and sniffle which enters their realm.
As a result, they don’t do anything for the Lord EXCEPT resist and rebuke the devil.
There has to be a balance.
The balance is quite simple.
When God places you into service for Him and asks you to build your portion of His kingdom, do it with all your heart. (1 Corinthians 10:31) Be a worker for the Lord.
However, recognize that God will allow Satan to fire arrows of temptation at you. Those arrows will come from the Liar himself, so know how to wield your sword of Truth. Be a warrior for the Lord.
Keep one hand on the shovel.
Keep one hand on the sword.
God has called us to be workers and warriors. Wimps and whiners never last long and they never build lasting things.
But workers and warriors leave a legacy. So, let’s leave a legacy!
