“Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.”
Psalm 72:18
Have you ever watched a really good magician perform?
I remember when I was a kid and saw my first card trick.
“Pick a card, any card.”
I picked a card and looked at it.
I put it back in the deck.
The deck was shuffled thoroughly, and my card was plucked from the deck and shown to me by the man with the sly grin.
It’s amazing to watch the curious things MEN can do.
And now I’ve lived long enough to experience many wonders that only God could do.
Just a few:
God saved a wretch like me.
God heard my three years of fasting and prayer and sent my bride to me.
God directly answered my prayer and handed me my current job.
God healed me when I was sick.
God kept me from harm and death numerous times.
God healed an inmate in our jail ministry who had tremors in his weak arms from a seizure disorder.
A week after we prayed for him his grip was as strong as a bear and he was praising God. His seizures left for good…I think they were scared of God.
An older inmate couldn’t read a small print Bible, so we prayed for his eyes and then watched Him read His first passage in years with tears streaming down His face.
God was glorified that night in a tiny, sweltering storage room with no air conditioning. It was crowded with 12 men and stacks of old desks. I can testify that the praise was hearty and unforgettable!
God protected my car when a fierce storm snapped a tree in half.
As I watched praying from my window, that large tree fell directly toward my car. Just before it came down, I watched it swing sideways, lift back up, and crash down BEHIND my car. I’ll never forget that one, either.
Years ago, God sent a mysterious security guard at 2 a.m. to walk my (then) fiancé through a crowd of hoodlums. They were blocking her apartment door in a shady neighborhood. (Fun fact: Her apartment didn’t have security guards…but God has “security guards” everywhere.)
I could go on, and on, and on.
God is not a magician, He’s just awesome. He can easily do things that defy logic, science, and “modern medicine.” He works in unseen realms in ways that amaze me.
Everything He does is wondrous.
We can’t see a lot of it now, but one day we’ll clearly understand the abilities of our great God.
In a world filled with troubles, it’s easy to find things that God HASN’T done according to OUR playbook.
What if we focus instead on the wondrous things He HAS done?
