When Folly Stinks

“Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.”
Ecclesiastes 10:1

One of the unfortunate side effects of a Covid-19 infection is the changes it makes to your sense of smell.
One of the most common smells that people notice is the near constant odor of rotting meat combined with burning rubber.

I have personally experienced this, and it is extremely unpleasant.
I smelled it in the shower.
I smelled it in the kitchen.
I smelled it in my bed.
I smelled it in my vehicle.

It affected everything so negatively that every beautiful aroma became disgusting.

Notice in the verse above that dead, rotting, stinking flies don’t belong in lovely perfume.
Rotting meat and burning rubber smells don’t belong in my shower, kitchen, bed, or vehicle.
Folly doesn’t belong in the life of a Christian who should be known for their wisdom and honor.

Folly WILL damage your testimony.
Engaging in foolish behavior is the best way to be known as a fool.

This isn’t the same as having a great sense of humor or enjoying a hearty laugh…those are good things.

Folly is when we make decisions that lack wisdom, foresight, or good sense.
Good character and a good reputation can take years to build, but one instance of personal folly can burn it all down in seconds.

If we make wise decisions, we’ll be known as wise.
But if we engage in folly, our testimonies will stink.

“Lord, please help me to have a sweet-smelling testimony today for your honor and glory.”
