The Humble Manger

“And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”
Luke 2:7

If anyone needed proof that Christ humbled himself when He came into this world, this verse speaks volumes.

The area was full of people, no doubt as a result of the Jews coming to the area to pay taxes. Joseph and Mary had to find a lowly stable in which to give birth to the Son of God.

Just think about that. The only begotten Son of God was born in a barn.

I was born in a hospital.
There was electricity.
There was running water.
There were teams of nurses and qualified doctors on call to assist where needed.
There was care for me and my mother available at every moment.

Jesus Christ had no such luxuries.
A teenaged, virgin girl gave birth to Him in a hay and dirt filled stable. I don’t know how many animals were in there, but I DO KNOW they were unqualified to provide medical care for anyone.

Isn’t that humbling?
Jesus chose the meager circumstances of His very birth. He did so as not to elevate Himself above anyone He came to save.

Nobody born poor in the most extreme elements could ever look at Christ and say, “Well, I had it far worse than you. You don’t know what it’s like to be born in a shack.”

Actually, He does.
Christ can identify with the poor, the lowly, the desperate, the scared, the discouraged, and the weak. We know this because it’s the state of the environment He was born into.

I was laid in a bassinet in the hospital, and Jesus Christ was laid into an animal feeding trough...how fitting since Christ is called the “Bread of Life”.

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51)

“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

I appreciate His humble beginnings. If man had written the script, the Son of God would have been born in a royal palace, not in an animal barn.

God chose base humility over privileged riches for His grand entrance into the world.
