Are You Teachable?

“The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.”
Psalm 25:9

Are you teachable?
I’ve worked many jobs where one of my duties was to teach people how to do something specific.

Some of those lessons were simple:
How to mop a floor.
How to scrub a 6 ft cutting board.
How to make a Caesar Salad.
How to organize various things.

Some of those lessons were harder:
How to handle chemicals.
How to drive a forklift.
How to use an overhead crane.
How to do trigonometry.

Some things took a lot of time to teach:
How to run a milling machine.
How to cut threads on a lathe.
How to design a stamping die.
How to operate a wire EDM machine.

Whatever the lesson, I could always tell whether I had a good student or not within the first five minutes of instruction.
You learn to read people, and you discover certain “tells” that let you know if they’ll be a good student.

I think these are the same “tells” that God sometimes sees in us when He’s trying to teach US something:

A constant smirk on the face usually told me that they were “too cool for school”…and I was right.
They NEVER lasted.

A lot of scoffing at specific instruction was a clear sign of disrespect…and that’s disrespectful to God, too, when we do it to Him.

Fidgety guys who were always looking around were distracted.
Distracted people get hurt.
The devil wants to distract us from God’s life lessons.

Repeatedly interrupting me while I was teaching…not only is that annoying, but an inability to be quiet and listen shows disregard for authority.

Doing things differently than they were taught was a red flag…if they found a better way, this was applauded. But usually it was a lazier, less effective way.

So, who was a good student?
The Focused, Quiet, Intuitive,
Respectful, Note-taking,
Engaged, Honest person.

God wants us to be meek and teachable...He has things for us to learn today, but we can only learn if we listen and pay attention to Him.

  1. Good points, Eric. And, having worked in education for 20 years, I can confidently say learning starts with a good teacher. This isn’t to say there aren’t disrespectful, lazy, and seemingly unteachable students. I’ve encountered them. However, being a good teacher, like Jesus–the Good Teacher–makes for the best students. I suppose my rambling point is this: God is a wonderful teacher, so we’d best respectfully listen and learn.

    1. You got that right! I always tried to make sure that I was being clear, concise, and discerning of their abilities to comprehend as well as perform.

The thing I love about the Lord is that He teaches us lessons for life, not just lessons to earn a paycheck.

Thanks for your thoughts! Well stated!
