Lessons Learned from Learning Lessons

“What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.”
Psalm 25:12

How does God teach us?
In whatever way He sees fit.

How many different ways have you learned lessons from God?
I’ve learned a lot of lessons in a lot of different ways.

Some lessons I’ve learned from making dumb mistakes and having to face the consequences.
Some lessons I’ve learned from watching other people make dumb mistakes.

Some lessons I’ve learned in prayer and study, alone with the Lord.
Some lessons I’ve learned from the pulpit as faithful men of God preached and taught the Word to me.

Some lessons I didn’t learn until God slapped me awake to them.
Some lessons I’ve thankfully learned before my “hands got dirty”.

Some lessons I heard and/or understood immediately.
Some lessons I’m still learning after decades on this planet.

As of late, God has taught me these (2) lessons which I want to apply to the upcoming new year:
– When I’m humble and living obedient to the Lord, hard life lessons are easier to understand.
– When I forsake my besetting sin and iniquity, I learn lessons from God much faster.

Which “learned lessons” will you be sure to apply in 2024?

  1. One lesson I learned from my earthly father was to not be too judgmental of others. If you told my dad about how someone did such-and-such, he would say, “I don’t know that.” At the time, I thought he meant it wasn’t his business, and perhaps he did–but there’s more. As a unseasoned educational administrator I’ve quickly learned to hear all sides of a story before drawing any conclusions. As it says in Proverbs: The first person to make his case seems right, until another shares their point of view.” ( I’m paraphrasing here.) So, the life lesson I’m learning is not to rush to judgment; slow down and get the whole story before thinking (and especially doing) too much.

    1. That’s an excellent lesson we can all apply, for sure. I hope to do the same, and I hope that others will do the same for me.

I learned in 2023 how difficult it is when someone rushes to judge my decision without knowing (biblically) WHY I did what I did…I guess that’s always a reminder for me to make sure I defer to grace rather than a hasty judgment.

Hasty judgments seem to lead to offenses and sometimes resentments, like dominoes that don’t really need to be toppled in the first place.

Thanks for sharing! I guess that’s another lesson I need to apply in 2024!
      (There are probably hundreds.)

  2. Similar to David’s lesson…I have been learning more that it is important to take time to allow God to have His say first. In my younger days I would often rush to do things only to find that there was a better way…if only I had waited on Him first!
