Part Two: The Shepherd is the Door

“I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
John 10:9

Jesus is the door of the sheepfold.
A sheepfold is a pen which the sheep are herded into to keep them safe from predators.

Out in the field, it’s a loose rock wall
(or natural cove formation) with a single point of entry for the flock of sheep.

At night, or in inclement weather, the sheep were all led into this enclosure and the shepherd would guard the door.

Jesus said that HE is the door.
And He says that WE are His sheep.

Jesus is the door between two areas of life, and He makes a very important point here.

OUTSIDE the enclosure is the pasture field. There we have some freedom to roam, graze, socialize, play, and explore.

INSIDE the enclosure is a safe haven of salvation, protection, cover, and rest.

BOTH of these areas are critical for
every Christian.

It’s unhealthy to camp out in one area all of the time.
We’re not to be out wandering in the world so much that we neglect our rest, safety, and gathering back together with fellow believers. (Church attendance matters, by the way. Hebrews 10:25)

We’re also not to be so “cooped up inside” and spiritually lethargic that we neglect our roles and duties to God out in the world.

Christ is the Good Shepherd.
He finds the lost souls and brings them to salvation in His sheepfold, placing them into His flock.

But then He appoints times for us to be in and out of His sheepfold (always among believers as a flock), and not merely wandering to and fro “doing our own spiritual thing.”

There is no better door than Christ.
The good shepherd knows when His sheep need to come inside for the night or get outside in the daytime.

He knows better than we do what we need for our spiritual health, growth, and protection.
I want to trust and obey His leadership today.
