Avoid the Murmuring Mob

“And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!”
Numbers 14:2

One of the most amazing things about humans is our ability to plan, organize, and accomplish great things.
God gave us the ability to join together as a congregation and glorify Him.

The devil knows how powerful a group can be…and he also knows how destructive a mob can be.

In Proverbs 6:16-19, God warns us against doing seven things that He hates…one of those things is particularly destructive to unit/group cohesion:
“…he that sows discord among the brethren.” (Proverbs 6:19)

When those twelve spies came back from their recon mission, they told the whole congregation of people about the enemies they had seen.

At that moment, SOMEONE turned to their neighbor with fear in their heart and began complaining…then another, then another, until eventually “all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron.”

What started that?
People sowing discord.
“Can you believe we came all the way out here for THIS?”
“He’s going to get us all killed!”
“If Moses really talked with God then he should have known what we’d be facing!”
“Why are we even here?
“Why’d we have to leave Egypt?”
“I miss my house in Egypt.”
“Aaron knows this is wrong, he’s just too scared to stand up to Moses!”
“Aaron is just as guilty for getting us all killed!”

Can you hear them?
That’s how a mob forms.
That’s what makes Satan chuckle.
That’s what gets him excited.

When the people get riled up against God, His Word, or His man…you can be SURE the devil is directly involved in the rebellion.
He stirs us emotionally so that we drop our faith, pick up his fear, and run like fools toward chaos and destruction…trashing and trampling good people along the way.

Don’t run with a crowd unless those people are individually running toward the LORD.
If you find such a congregation, add your prayer and praise and God will add His power to accomplish His will in that army of believers.

Never let ANY mob of people control your emotions.
Only let Jesus have your heart.

  1. “Don’t run with a crowd unless those people are individually running toward the LORD.” Now that’s good advice! Thank you, Eric, for your reflections about unruly gatherings-which we’re seeing a lot of right now.
