His Promises: Part One

“By which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” 2 Peter 1:4

I’ve made a lot of promises in my life, but I’m finding that I’m making fewer as I get older.

I think that’s because I continually recognize my own inability to keep them, even if my intentions and abilities are properly engaged.

Don’t get me wrong, I can keep my word with the best of them. I can be somewhere on time, meet a deadline, perform a task, and finish a project.

What gives me pause is using the words, “I promise that I will (fill in the blank).”

The truth is, I can’t promise that I’ll have my faculties, strengths, abilities, and health tomorrow. Actually, I can’t even promise that I will be alive tomorrow. All of those things are in God’s hands. I can’t make promises that rest solely on His will for my body and life.

But as I get older, I’m leaning more on God’s promises to shape my intentions, actions, and faith. There is real freedom when a Christian stands faithfully on God’s eternal promises written in His Word. In this series, I want to share scriptural promises that have forever changed my mind, faith, and character.

Do you have a favorite promise of God that you stand on everyday?

  1. I am excited by this new series Eric! I think it is a good sign of maturity when we promise less than we did as young men; as you point out well, we need to be aware of the aging process and its affects on us. There are some folk in our church who are in advanced years, they often say “if the Lord wills it and spares us.” This is a recognition of our limited mortality and His eternal care for us – hallelujah! I love Philippians when I need a lift, I think this verse refers to a Godly promise we can hold onto each day: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God bless you richly today brother 🙏

    1. Thanks brother Alan, I’m also excited to start this series. I do better with publishing a series because it forces me to take time to write. Also, the promises of God are a never-ending, daily focus for me.
I love that promising verse that you shared brother! So true! May your day be filled with His promises, power, and protection!

    1. Good point, Nancy…the verse that just came to mind is 1 John 1:9…

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness.”

I thank God for that promise when I sin against the Lord…which is more often than I care to while walking in this world in the flesh.

Here’s another promise: one day there will be no more sin!!

      Bless you, Nancy!!
