The story of the wise men is a fascinating one to me…even though it’s rife with errors in its traditional re-telling. For instance, there were three gifts, not necessarily three wise men. They probably rode on horses, not camels. And they didn’t find Jesus in the manger as a newborn, but in a house with Mary around the age of one or two. (Matthew 2:1, 11, 16)
But those things don’t fascinate me. What I see in this story is what we hear the least about: their journey. These men were wise enough to understand that a child was born unlike any other. This child was worth taking a long and perilous journey. This child was worth their time and resources. When they finally arrived and found Mary and the child Jesus, they presented their gifts, fell down, and worshipped him.
As Christians, we can relate. We’re ALSO taking a long journey. We’re wise men on our way through this perilous world and going to see the King of Kings at the end of the journey. When that happens, all knees will bow and all tongues will confess that He is Lord. (Philippians 2:9-11)
Any crowns presented to us for our service to the Lord will likely be cast back at Jesus’ feet, the least we can offer to the One who died for us. (Revelation 4:10-11)
Wise men today seek Jesus, receive Him as Savior, then journey through this perilous life and find Him at the end of the journey. Stay the narrow course, my wise friends, the King at the end of the road is more than worth it!

I have never looked at it like that. I didn’t imagine that the wisemen saw Jesus after a year. That’s so interesting.

Each day is another day closer to home! I never thought of our journey as similar to the wise men’s journey. It helps to motivate me to finish strong.

Oh, I do like that idea that we are also on a long journey. So true! We will all probably ride, run, walk and maybe even limp somewhere along the way. But kneeling at the feet of Jesus at the end of our travels will be most amazing of all!
