Last night in his State of the Union address, President Trump took time to recognize U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan and 11-year-old Milly Cate McClymond, one of the campers he helped save during the catastrophic July 4, 2025 floods in Central Texas. The waters surged through Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp, catching many by surprise.
In those terrifying moments, Milly Cate “closed her eyes and prayed to God… she thought she was going to die,” the President shared. Her prayer was answered when Ruskan descended from a helicopter and brought her — and 164 others — to safety. The President awarded Scott Ruskan the Legion of Merit medal for extraordinary heroism…and it was his first mission ever.
What an incredible testimony: God hears cries in the darkest hour and sends help — whether through the selfless courage of a rescuer, or through the saving work of the Almighty. Just as Ruskan was a vessel of physical rescue, so God offers the greater rescue of the soul.
We were all once headed for spiritual danger — the “grave” or “pit” of sin and damnation— yet God lifted us up through Jesus Christ. Our ultimate rescue wasn’t just from floodwaters: it was from death itself. Psalm 30:3 illustrates that God guards life, and more importantly, secures eternity for all who trust in Him.
Today let us be thankful for every form of rescue we witness — and even more, for the One who rescues us eternally from the deadly floodwaters of sin.

What an amazing story of service and bravery by Scott Ruskan! But there is the bravery of young Milly Cate who in her distress turned to God, which is also noteworthy. As you so correctly state, let us not forget our Lord Jesus – the greatest Rescuer of all! How blessed we are in Him. May we introduce others to Him as often as possible. God bless you and your family today brother Eric 🙏
