In the 1986 film Highlander, a group of immortals live secretly among humanity, unable to die except by the sword of another immortal. Across centuries they hunt one another in an unending contest, each battle narrowing the field until only one remains to receive “the Prize.” Their haunting motto captures the entire conflict: “There can be only one.” While the story is fiction, it echoes a profound spiritual reality—when it comes to conquering sin, defeating death, and reigning forever in glory, there truly can be only One.
Jesus is not one of many spiritual contenders. He is “the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of His person.” He alone stepped through eternity into our broken world on a rescue mission for humanity. The One who upholds all things by the word of His power entered the very creation sustained by His voice.
Unlike mythical heroes who fight to preserve their own lives, Christ came to lay His life down for us mortals. The very humans He formed rebelled against Him. They mocked Him. They crucified Him. Yet “by Himself” He purged our sins. No ally stood beside Him. No other sacrifice was needed. At the cross, evil was not triumphant—evil was defeated. Death was not victorious when the stone sealed the tomb—death was conquered forever when the stone was rolled away.
Now He has sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. The battle is finished. The victory is complete. He has obtained a more excellent name that will never fade, never be diminished, and never be replaced.
All the religions of the world may imagine their coming deliverer. Nations will fight to exert dominance and maintain control over earthly kingdoms. But Messiah has already come to demonstrate true power. And when it comes to vanquishing evil and reigning forever in glory—there can be only One: Jesus Christ!
