God’s Multi-tool

One of my most prized possessions is an original Gerber multitool that I received for Christmas from my dad many years ago. It isn’t flashy or modern, but to me it’s special. Folded neatly into its handles are a whole collection of tools—nifty blades, screwdrivers, files, awls, and pliers—each engineered to fold into its hollow handles. It’s an impressive little piece of craftsmanship.

Truthfully, I’ve probably looked at it more than I’ve actually used it, though I have used it a lot over the past thirty years. Part of that is because I appreciate it as an engineering marvel, and part of it is sentimental. Since it came from my dad, I’ve never wanted to overuse it or risk damaging it. Still, I know that every tool inside it has a purpose, and the multitool is at its best when each part is used the way it was designed.

In a far greater way, God has given His children something even more valuable—His Word. In 2 Timothy 3:16–17, Scripture reveals what we might think of as God’s multitool for our lives. But we need to use this tool more than merely looking at it…especially in the way God meant it to be used.

First, the Word provides teaching. It shows us what is right. Just as a tool guides the work of our hands, God’s Word guides the direction of our lives with truth.

Second, the Word brings rebuking. It shows us what is wrong. Like a tool that exposes a flaw in our work, Scripture reveals attitudes and actions that do not line up with God’s will.

Third, the Word offers correction. It shows us how to get right. When something has gone off course, God’s Word helps straighten what has become crooked and restores us to the proper path.

Finally, the Word gives instruction in righteousness. It teaches us how to stay right. Day by day, Scripture trains us to live in ways that honor God.

When every one of these tools is used correctly, the child of God becomes throughly furnished and prepared for every good work. But none of these tools can be neglected. God’s multitool is designed to work completely in our lives. It shows us what’s right, what’s wrong, how to get right, and how to stay right.

  1. Good morning brother Eric 🙂
What a brilliant illustration of the Word of God – it certainly is the ultimate multi-tool in our hands, praise God. This brings us back to the reason why we should carry it with us… for every unexpected moment of need.
God bless you and your family today 🙏

  2. Another great lesson, the Word of God like a Gerber tool is great to take care of an issue then and there. A loose hinge on a door can be tighten without having to go get the tool box The Word of God can deal with something right away when it is hidden in our hearts and available for use

  3. What a great analogy, Eric! God’s Word is the best multi-tool, but just as you pointed out, we have to use it and not let it get dusty on the shelf. I carry it with me in my heart every day. Have you heard the acronym, Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, for the BIBLE? Hope you have a blessed day, Eric!
