The Endurance of Adino

“These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time.”
2 Samuel 23:8

Adino the Eznite was a man who possessed incredible endurance.
The Bible doesn’t say that about him, but we can certainly draw that conclusion.

If you’ve ever played sports, you know that every sport has scheduled stops.
Every game is broken down into quarters or periods, and in-between those are time-outs and other breaks in the game.

If there were no scheduled stops the players would drop from exhaustion.

I remember wrestling with my friends when I was younger…after fifteen or twenty minutes we were all winded and needed a break.

Now imagine a battlefield.
There is no rest in combat.
The first one to rest has been gravely wounded or killed by his enemy.

Adino the Eznite squared off against 800 men and killed them all with a spear.

How long do you think THAT took?
– What was going through his mind after fighting the first ten men?
– How many blows do you think he took along the way?
– How emotionally and physically drained was he at the end of that battle royal?

There’s a reason that David chose this man as his chief captain: Adino was wholly committed to waging warfare AND he had the endurance to go the distance in battle.

Are you “in it to win it” no matter how long and hard the trials of life get?
Do you seek out and yoke up with Christians who are committed to finishing their lives STRONG for the LORD?

Wouldn’t it be great to handle trials with the endurance of Adino the Eznite?
The surest way to build such endurance is to daily seek the Lord, hide His Word in your heart, move forward for God’s glory, and NEVER quit fighting the good fight.

“But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” 2 Timothy 4:5

  1. I am sure Adino had great reserves from a healthy diet; we need spiritual reserves from the healthy diet of His Word (as you rightly said) and prayer each day. May we build our Godly reserves each day brother. God bless you today 🙏
