Guinea Pig Gold: Green Pepper

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Our guinea pigs believe that the refrigerator is a land of paradise overflowing with fresh green peppers.

They have learned the sound of our footsteps on the hardwood floor, and the sound of the refrigerator door opening. A pull on the plastic produce bin and the rustling of plastic bags is all they can handle. From the other room one of the boys emits loud squeals of excitement. He’s about to win the Guinea pig lottery again, just like every other day at 5:00pm.

“Weeeeeeek! Weeeeeeek! Weeeeeeeeeek!“

At this point, I can usually hear them scrambling in their cage. Melvin runs back and forth, his blind eyes unable to see anything. Midnight, named for his jet black coat, darts in and out of his hut, clucking excitedly.

I prepare chunks of green pepper for each of them, rinsing and drying the pieces on a paper towel. When I rip the paper towel from the holder, that’s another auditory jolt for the pigs, who are no doubt “popcorning” in the other room, flinging shavings and pellets onto the floor.

They’re reaching the breaking point…now I hear them rumbling at each other, or me, telling me to hurry up because they’re starving. One look at their bellies destroys their argument. At four years old they look like furry eggplants that have been left in the garden too long: well-watered, swollen, and round.

What do I want them to understand? I want them to know that I love them, and the God who made them is an awesome God indeed.

But don’t take my word for it, watch them in action in the video below and decide for yourself…😉

  1. Your description of Melvin and Midnight’s excitement over their daily green pepper treat is utterly adorable and paints such a vivid picture of their personalities. It’s endearing how they’ve learned to associate the sounds of the refrigerator and the paper towel with the promise of their favorite snack. Your affection for them shines through in every word, and it’s clear they bring a lot of joy to your life. Wanting them to understand your love for them, and the appreciation for the beauty of their creation, is a heartwarming sentiment. It’s beautiful how these small, everyday moments with pets can bring such immense happiness and a sense of connection. Keep enjoying these precious times with Melvin and Midnight, your delightful guinea pig companions! 🐹💚🌿

  2. Very cool! So the boys know the difference between someone just opening the fridge and someone also opening the vegetable drawer? My dog has me well trained. Every time he goes out and comes back in I give him a treat.

    1. Yeah, they are pretty sharp. I think Melvin has enhanced hearing and awareness due to his cataracts.
Every day at 5:00 they get their green pepper. So when the fridge opens at that time, they are super excited.

Then at the end of the night they start squeaking at 11:00pm for their evening green lettuce. They’re great pets…lots of personality.👍🏻👍🏻❤️

    1. 😀 It’s hard to resist when they’re squeaking for things…we have to be careful to make sure they eat mostly hay, but even that gets them excited.
They’re brothers and have grown up together….and we want to keep them just under the sumo weight class.
