Part Four: Mercy K.O.

“And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.”
John 8:9

What did Jesus tell the Pharisees?
“Anyone with sinless hands is more than welcome to stone this adulterous woman.”

That’s what I’d call a mic drop moment.
When we would preach in jail, I’d often ask the inmates to ponder where their hands have been and what they’ve been involved with. Staring at your hands for sixty seconds can really bring back memories: both good and bad.

Hands were made to do good things that honor the God who made them…but we’ve all gone astray…our hands are all tainted.

But Jesus had sinless hands.
Jesus had words of truth.
And His words struck a chord in those Pharisees…the Bible says that they heard His Words and were convicted in their conscience.

What does this mean?
It means that there is still hope for those who are dogmatic and stubborn in their ways.
There is still hope for those who lurk and prowl with plans of destruction.

The right spoken words can prick their conscience.
The right nuggets of truth can be a mirror to reveal their own faults…and that can change evil hands into hands that work to do good.

There is also hope for those who are being shamed for their sin…and the best place for any sinner is to be left alone with Jesus, just like the woman in this story.

They thought they would shame her by bringing her to Christ, but instead Jesus shamed THEM and they all left…only she remained.

It’s a good day to get alone with Jesus.

    1. I remember when I was standing in the lobby of the jail years ago, flipping through the blue Gideon’s Bible that we handed out to the inmates.
I came across this passage and instantly knew it was the one for the evening:

“Who may ascend onto the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place?
One who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to deceit And has not sworn deceitfully.”
      Psalm 24:3-4

“Clean hands” became that sermon, preached many times. Thankful for the blood of Jesus which washes all those sins off the hands.👍🏻
