Part Two: The King’s Ride

“And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.”

John 12:14-15

“So, Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a small donkey, what’s the big deal?”

An intriguing facet of the life of Christ is that prophets were flashing neon signs about Him long before He came to earth.

In the case of THIS prophecy, here is what Zechariah wrote 600 years before Christ’s birth:

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
Zechariah 9:9

And this prophecy was perfectly fulfilled six hundred years later when Christ Jesus straddled a donkey and humbly rode into Jerusalem.

As prophesied, He was just and lowly.
As prophesied, He brought salvation.
As prophesied, He was King.

But the King wasn’t riding a warhorse and coming to conquer. He was purposely showing that He came in peace to give himself a ransom for many.

No King on earth would ever ride around in a golf cart…but that’s essentially what Christ did by today’s standard. He chose the most humble means to carry himself.

Jesus did the exact opposite of what a King should do. That’s because His focus was on getting US back to heaven, not building His own earthly kingdom for His own protection and gain.

He had to defeat death, hell, and the grave in order for us to be saved….and He was willing to humble and expose Himself to shame and all danger to make it happen.

The King rode in on a donkey.
He was absolutely selfless.
He was absolutely the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

Consider His humility today, and thank God He is a King unlike any other in history!

  1. As I read your excellent devotional Eric, of our Saviour coming into Jerusalem on a donkey, I am reminded of His first donkey ride in Mary’s womb. In that first one He was coming to live amongst us, but in the second He was submitting humbly to death on a cross. But hallelujah He is coming back again, and this time on a war horse!

God bless you today brother 🙏

    1. Yes indeed, brother Alan! He was humbly born, lived humbly, and His life ended in humble fashion also.
When I consider that, I recognize that this “man” is unlike any other in history…having great power to reign, yet choosing to lay it all down. The most intriguing story ever told.

Have a blessed day, my friend! Thanks for your faithfulness!👍🏻🙏
