Irrational Fear of the Future?

“And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!”
Numbers 14:2

Stress brings out those emotions that we don’t want people to see.
It’s during stressful times that our hearts release pent-up aggression, accusations, old wounds, and FEAR.
Then our lips share with the world how we REALLY feel and what we REALLY think.

The Israelites heard a bad report from the 12 spies that Moses sent into the promised land, and that was their last straw.

Their wilderness wandering and steady diet of manna had apparently pushed them to the limit…and when they were told there were giants and armies to conquer, they wailed in fear.

And then they started pointing fingers…right at Moses and Aaron.
We do the same thing, though.
We point at politicians and accuse our leaders for every rotten thing that happens to us.

But get this…
They murmured against Moses and Aaron about things that
HADN’T. EVEN. HAPPENED. YET.

They were scared of the possibility of confronting enemies they had only heard about and hadn’t even seen yet…and that was enough to strike fear in their hearts, which brought wailing and anger to their lips.

Are you dreading some giant or trial that you haven’t even experienced yet?
Are you being bombarded with thoughts of fear over things that could happen, but haven’t yet?

“Heavenly Father, though I walk in the flesh, I wage war today in the spirit.
The weapons of my warfare are not carnal, but mighty spiritual weapons from God that tear down demonic strongholds of fear.
Lord, I choose to cast down anxiety, and every wicked lie that exalts itself over God in my mind. I choose to take these thoughts captive in obedience to Jesus Christ, who is Truth.

I refuse to dwell on fearing things that haven’t even happened yet. (2 Cor 10:3-5)
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
I refuse to embrace fear…for Christ is my confidence. Amen.”

Stay confident. Give fear NO place.
Walk by faith, not by sight.

  1. Thank you for this timely post Eric. Recently in the last few days I had been worrying about something that might happen, which I realised was wrong on my part. The incident might never come to pass, yet I was expending energy on it. All this reminds me of the reaction of King Hezekiah to a threatening letter from his enemies: “Then Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.” ( 2 Kings 19:14) We must do exactly this with our fears and concerns.

God bless you today brother 🙏

    1. Thank you brother Alan, that’s such a good point about Hezekiah. When I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy I took the lab report before the Lord and we had a good long talk…no matter how foreboding things seem a little talk with Jesus makes things right.

      God bless you my friend!

  2. You’re right, brother Eric. It’s easy to “awful-ize” about what may happen. May God grant is the serenity and grace to live in the now. After all, He has past, present and future covered. Blessings!

    1. Great advice to “Live in the now”…I’ve recently discovered Cesar Milan “The Dog Whisperer” and that is one of his best lines. If those rambunctious humans and dogs can respond well to it, then there’s a good reason! It’s Godly advice!😆

  3. Great post, Eric. When stresses about tomorrow overwhelm me, I think of this scripture, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34 NRSV)
