His Promises: Part Two

This verse is arguably the most popular verse in the entire Bible. It’s been printed on Gospel tracts, t-shirts, placards, and billboards. When I was six years old, I saw “John 3:16” signs held by wrestling fans while watching Hulk Hogan tangle with Andre the Giant or Rowdy Roddy Piper on TV. I didn’t understand what that meant at the time.

In the 80’s and 90’s, “John 3:16” was present at a lot of arenas and sporting events. I don’t see it as much anymore, but I’m hoping it makes a glorious comeback…because that verse contains an incredible promise.

The promise of John 3:16 can forever change the destination of a living soul. The Bible says that we all have a sin problem that cannot be solved on our own. There is no amount of good deeds that can validate our lost condition and give us a righteous standing before a Holy God. (Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5)

Enter Jesus Christ! God would never be able to find a valid human candidate able to defeat the tempter, live a sinless life, endure the suffering of the cross, conquer death, and destroy the works of the devil…so He sent His only Son to do just that for us.

This awesome verse has a promise that changed my life when I was eleven: If you will believe on Jesus Christ to be your personal Savior, trusting that His death at the cross was the payment for your sins, then you can receive God’s free gift of eternal life.

God promises that you will never, not ever, perish if you receive Christ into your life. My friend, I hope that you consider this awesome promise of God today. If you have never prayed to receive Jesus Christ into your heart, you can do so right now.

“Heavenly Father, I choose to receive the promise of John 3:16. I choose to believe that Jesus Christ was sent into this world to defeat sin, death, hell, and the grave…because He loved me enough to die for me. I believe that His resurrection was the sign which demonstrated that you accepted His payment for the sins of the world.

I ask you to forgive my sins, create in me a clean heart, and renew a right spirit within me. Today I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and I ask you to fill me with the Holy Spirit so that I can walk in truth and wisdom as a born-again child of God. Today I receive the free gift of eternal life, please help me to live a changed life that glorifies you! Amen!”

  1. Beautiful post! John 3:16 is the cornerstone of our faith, yet I feel that it is often overlooked because it is ubiquitous. The world needs that promise today more than ever! I agree with you – I hope it makes a comeback at sporting events and everywhere! 🙌

  2. John 3:16 is an amazing verse, it is a great starting point for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. I have used it as a starting point in past street conversations to go into the Roman Road verses. There is power in these words, even if we leave them written on a bit of paper in public, or in a library book. God bless you today brother Eric. 🙏

  3. Great blog! I recently read a book called John 3:16 by Nancy Moser. Wonderful read! It is a fictional book–and the setting of the book is around sporting events, where John 3:16 placards are used—and how they impact the people who see them. Actually–great story telling–even though my summary doesn’t do it justice. Anyway–our local library has the book–maybe yours does too! 🙂

    1. Thanks! I have heard the name Nancy Moser but not that book…I will look for it! I wonder how many souls have been changed by the smallest Gospel witness: a placard, a tract, a quick word in passing…I’m convinced that somewhere in heaven there will be a record of God’s incredible choreography as it relates to ministry work great and small…and I want to see how that orchestration happened!

Thanks for your encouraging words and recommendation, Katie! 🙏👍🏻🙂
