God’s Gearbox

If you’ve driven in a car lately, and arrived safely at your destination without mechanical failure, then thank God for good engineers.

One of the engineering marvels inside your car is the transmission:

“A transmission, also known as a gearbox, is a mechanical device in vehicles that transfers power from the engine to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to move at different speeds. It changes the gear ratios to optimize power and speed, similar to how gears work on a bicycle.”

I’ve worked in manufacturing for over twenty years, and half of that has involved high-precision metal machining. Without precision machining of gears and shafts, your car isn’t going anywhere smoothly.

Every component in a transmission is designed to function fluidly with corresponding components…gears have to mesh in a precise manner: not too tight, not too sloppy.

The gears and shafts have to be made from steel and hardened to the exact hardness: too soft and they wear out, too hard and they crack.

God has built his church and it should function like a transmission. Each Christian is a gear that must be precisely shaped to work in connection with those Christian “gears” around us.

The local church is a perfect example of God’s gearbox, where we mesh with others to move God’s work forward. He created us to do His good works. But, just as a transmission needs many precise shafts and gears to function properly, we too must be precision-focused Christians in order to get the work done.

You have a specific and unique role in God’s gearbox today. Are you letting God precisely form you for His good work?

  1. wow Eric! This is a brilliant illustration of God’s church. But my question is this; are we an automatic or manual (stick shift) geared church? As I write this the job of oil in the gearbox comes to my mind, the Holy Spirit in the church. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful devotion today. May our Father God continue to guide and bless you today brother 🙏

    1. Thanks brother Alan…dare I say we should be an automatic geared church: meaning we should automatically adapt to the speed God wants us to move at.

But I think in this world the church too often grabs the gear shift and tries to slow down or speed up the works of the Lord: whether individually or corporately.

So that puts us at an automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel.😆

      God bless you, brother!
