Family Feud

There are some game shows that ask questions and get some wacky answers…Family Feud is first on my list.

Two families square off to guess the most popular polled answers to basic questions like this:

“Name something you always find in your refrigerator…”

Answers? “Milk!” “Eggs!” “Cheese!” “Kids!” “Mold!” “Dad!”

I used to watch this game because it was fairly fast moving, but also because the answers were based on the poll of 100 people. Whatever the polled answers were, those were the answers each family had to come up with in order to get the points. I was forced to think like the masses.

It was rare to find a family that could clear the board of every answer without a couple of goofy answers being given. Those answers would always leave everyone laughing and scratching our heads. But their fellow family members, knowing it was a terrible answer, would still clap and say “Good answer! Good answer!”

Why? To maintain their family unity and keep up morale…Bad answer but we still love ya!

My Pastor recently announced that he is planning to retire on June 1st. This came as a shock to many since he is only 55 years young. Our deacons approved nominating our missions Pastor to take over as head Pastor.

The church voted and approved Pastor Matt with 94% approval. Retiring Pastor Tim spoke and said that it’s okay to not get 100% approval, that some disagreement is actually a healthy thing, and I agree, but only if it is constructive. As long as the 6% don’t start acting out with rumors and gossip, there should be no problems.

Churches most often split due to selfishness and pride. What matters most in any church is that the Pastor and the people are submitted to the will of God and willing to follow Him individually first, and then corporately as a body of believers. My Pastor reiterated this on Sunday night after the vote, saying that in order for Gods will to be accomplished, we must now go forward in unity for His honor and glory.

Christians, each of us have preferences and can get it wrong, say it wrong, and live it wrong. But instead of sowing discord over preferences and opinions, let’s promote restoration, peace, and unity in the body of Christ. Instead of promoting what WE think, we should promote what GOD thinks.

Instead of a family feud over differing opinions, let’s unite over common ground: Jesus Christ is King, and we humbly serve Him with our lives, so that He alone may be glorified and promoted.

  1. We have a new secretary for our church. She’s young. I asked her how it was going. She mentioned that some of the older members have said mean things to her and she doesn’t know why. I waved it off, saying, “It’s not you. They’re dealing with frontal lobe shrinkage. That makes them really crotchety.” And we chuckled-but this is a serious issue with some of the elderly. Loved your message, Eric! 🙂

  2. I love your theme of game shows this week! Kudos to you for finding a connection in each one to our lives in Christ.

I’ve been through several church splits in my life, and they are not fun. I agree that we should put our pride and opinions aside and seek the will of God instead.

Great post! Have a blessed day, Eric.
