Don’t Let Sin Eat Your Name

“The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.”
Proverbs 10:7

My uncle told me a story recently.

He said that he bought his first house back in the late 1970’s with his wife and young son. The house was very old, probably built at the turn of the last century.

They discovered ants in the house and were unable to eradicate them, so my uncle sent wife and son off to her parents house so he could dig a little deeper into the problem.

He found most of the ants in the bathroom and determined that they were in the wall. So, he swung a claw hammer into the wall and it exploded with dust and ants.
They had eaten the wall and left a mere shell of dry, rotten wood.
It was so bad that he couldn’t get down to anything solid and actually ended up tearing off the entire wall of the house and rebuilding it completely.

Because of ants.
Sin is like ants. Sin will eat at your life on the inside and leave the appearance of strength on the outside…until eventually the outside crumbles, too.

Sin causes rot.
Not only can it rot your life and your soul, but also your name. Ever driven past a rotting house? It cannot be salvaged, and its glory days are long forgotten.

But a historical place that has been
well-kept is a joy to experience…
like a testimony that has been guarded.

John Wilkes Booth.
William Booth.

One of these men shot and killed President Abraham Lincoln.
His name is rotten in history.

The other man founded the Salvation Army to reach lost souls for Christ.
His name is blessed in history.

Guard your heart and your testimony and your name may be remembered with gladness by future generations.
Don’t let sin eat your testimony.
Don’t let sin eat your name.

Keep your armor on.

  1. This is a very effective analogy of sin and the damage it causes in life. Thank you for sharing it with us today Eric. Incidentally, William Booth is one of my heroes of the faith. God bless you richly today brother 🙏

  2. Eric, I was drinking my breakfast smoothie while reading your description of ants and dust exploding out of the wall. I almost did a spit-take! But, kudos on that highly effective analogy. 🙂
