Rock Solid

It has been incredibly hot and humid here in Southeast Michigan. Last Saturday we had the privilege of moving my Mom and her belongings from one apartment to another about 12 miles away…in the 90 degree heat.

When my wife and I arrived at 10:00am, we began going to work inside her apartment, wrapping/packing any remaining items and disassembling furniture.

About ten minutes later, her two hired helpers showed up with the U-Haul truck. Apparently, one of the two had to back out at the last minute, so the other showed up with his girlfriend. AJ and Amanda proved to be rock solid in helping us move.

Load after load, stacking the truck, upstairs and down…we finally got the fifteen foot truck packed in about three hours. We were all sweaty, tired, and hungry…but we pushed through and got her moved out. On to the next place!

A short drive later we backed the U-Haul truck near the back door of the new apartment complex. We were temporarily parked in a no parking zone near a hydrant, but had no other choice. We were rewarded for that decision by being immediately screamed at by an angry tenant. Apparently, we were “blind, dumb, and ignorant.” It was quite the welcoming committee.

Nevertheless, we dug deep and began two hours of exhausting work, quite literally running on empty. Poor Amanda was inside the 1,000 degree box truck, filling each empty shopping cart with boxes and staging furniture for us to move inside. She probably got heat stroke that day.

When the last piece of furniture was moved inside we rejoiced. My body could relax just knowing it was over. We thanked AJ and Amanda profusely and I told them their efforts were “rock solid”.

I’m thankful for people who are willing to help. That is a Godly trait and a much needed one in our world today. There are a lot of overwhelmed people who just need some help through their struggles…they need someone to come alongside and offer “rock solid” support, just like Christ offers us.

In the midst of moving in, I was starting to get extremely dehydrated. I’m not usually a fan of tap water, but I needed some immediate cold water. I tore open a moving box marked “mugs” and grabbed the first one. Filling it with cold water I drank it like a dying man, then drank another one. When I read the mug, it had a verse which made me smile and seemed quite fitting for the day:

May your day be Rock Solid in Christ!

  1. I say ditto and Amen to Nancy’s comment. Moving someone’s precious possessions are not for the faint of heart. Bless you and your wife for being such a blessing to your Mom.
