Lively Stones or Dead Rocks?

When I was a kid, we lived next to a large field. In one corner there was a massive pile of rocks. I asked my dad one day why they were piled there, and he explained that long ago the field had been farmed. Every time the ground was plowed, the rocks were pulled out and tossed aside. Over the years they had gathered into a heap, and now sat there lifeless, useless, and forgotten.

That’s not God’s plan for His people. The Lord doesn’t pull Christians out of His field and cast them into some church corner to waste away until heaven. Instead, He calls us ā€œliving stones,ā€ carefully built together into a spiritual house with a holy purpose. His Spirit dwells in us, making us more than simply dead weight in a pile (1 Corinthians 6:17, 19–20).

If churches or Christians begin to resemble that pile of abandoned rocks—silent, purposeless, and growing moss—something has gone wrong. Our identity is not as discarded rubble, but as a vibrant dwelling place of the living God. Together, we show the world that God is active in the affairs of men and that His people are being used for the greatest purpose: to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  1. Excellent post Eric. We are to be alive in our Lord, good witnesses of His love. You reminded me of a favourite gospel quartet from India, the Living Stones Quartet. Look them up, they are good. God bless you today brother šŸ™
