Lights in the Darkness

Imagine being deep inside a cave with a torch that has lost its flame. Every step is uncertain. You grope in the darkness, bumping into walls, unsure which direction to turn. Your heart pounds as you wonder—does the next step send me tumbling into a crevasse? Will I crash into unseen dangers hidden in the blackness? The darkness is thick, oppressive, and terrifying.
Then, in the distance, you see a faint glow moving toward you. Relief floods your soul as a kind stranger approaches, holding a burning torch. Without hesitation, he lights your torch with his own, and the darkness around you fades. You long to follow him, but he gently smiles and says he must go find others who are still lost in the dark. Before he leaves, he gives you one instruction: As you find others along your way, light their torches too.

That’s exactly what Jesus has done for us. He saw us stumbling in spiritual darkness and lit the flame of salvation within our hearts. Now, as children of light, we’re called to do the same—to carry His light into the shadows and share it freely with others who have yet to see it.

And just as a torch in a cave can lead others to safety, the collective light of God’s people shines like a beacon of hope to the world. When believers walk in truth, obedience, and love, we become that “city set on a hill”—a light that cannot be hidden, and a guiding glow for all who are still searching for the way home.

  1. Thank you for sharing this excellent message today Eric, which is quite close to Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” A favourite verse of mine. You also reminded me of when as lads we went down coal pits in the woods dug by old miners, you never experience darkness like that anywhere else for sure. God bless you today brother 🙏

    1. Thanks brother Alan, it’s funny I was intending to include that verse at the end but forgot…thank you for the reminder I’m going back to add that!😆👍🏻

  2. Wow, what a powerful analogy! Our pastor just encouraged us yesterday to tell our story to others as a witness of God’s love and mercy. Then, I read Proverbs 24:11 today as part of my daily devotion, “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter.” You’re right! We are the light of the world and we cannot stand by and let others stay lost in the darkness. Have a blessed day, Eric!
