Buy the Truth!

Whenever you buy something, there is a cost. Kids often have a hard time with this concept. Before a certain age, it’s hard for them to understand that people work, use their energy and talents, receive a paycheck, then have money to buy what they need. Parents often give chores and an allowance payment to teach “the value of a buck.”

It’s always nice to see enterprising young people who understand well that money doesn’t grow on trees—it comes from hard work—and so they apply themselves to hard work, buy things, and appreciate what they’ve earned.

On the contrary, it’s hard to appreciate a spoiled rich kid who has had everything handed to them in life. They’ve had things bought for them, and often there’s little appreciation for their possessions.

Solomon writes in Proverbs that a wise man should “buy the truth” and never sell it. That means we should spend time (our greatest commodity) and effort to understand truth and lies, then grab hold of truth and never let it go. We ought to approach Christ the same way. We can’t earn God’s grace or salvation, but we can put in work daily to study the Truth and the Liar—and then bind ourselves to Truth and never sell Him for a lie.

The devil wants us to sell out to lies every day, but what is truth worth to you? What would it take for you to sell Jesus and truth for a juicy, delicious, and sinful lie? Hopefully nothing. Solomon says we ought to consider the Truth as priceless—and never worth selling.

  1. Thank you brother Eric for this devotional thought – how we need to cling tenaciously to the truth of Christ our Lord and Saviour every day. May we value Him with all we have, even though we can’t fully comprehend His eternal value. God bless you today 🙏
