A Virgin Birth?

I’ve heard the phrase virgin birth for so long that it’s easy for it to lose its shock value. It can begin to sound like just another religious phrase—familiar, seasonal, almost expected. That’s why I’m grateful that Christmas keeps bringing this story back to the surface, forcing us to stop and reckon with how utterly supernatural it really is.

Think about it in ordinary terms. Any farmer would be stunned if one of his cows was suddenly pregnant without ever being near a bull. A cat owner would be baffled if their female housecat conceived without contact with another cat. If zookeepers discovered a lone female chimpanzee was pregnant, there would be investigations, disbelief, and endless questions. We instinctively know that doesn’t happen.

And yet, when it comes to Jesus, we often nod politely and say, “Yes, the virgin birth,” as though it were merely a line in a story. Perhaps that’s because it happened two thousand years ago, far removed from public memory. Or perhaps because religious truths, repeated often enough, can become embedded into culture rather than marveled at as reality. Some believe it. Some deny it. Many barely pause to consider it.

But Scripture tells us this was no accident and no legend. Matthew reminds us that the virgin birth fulfilled a prophecy spoken more than seven hundred years earlier: â€śBehold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son.” God announced the miracle long before it happened—and then He did exactly what He said He would do.

Why did the Savior require a virgin birth? Because God does not work according to our limitations. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. He chose a method so far outside normal human processes that faith would be required to accept it. This was not meant to invite scoffing, but wonder.

I believe the virgin birth is true—not simply because it is “what Christians believe,” but because it reflects how God consistently operates. He moves supernaturally, unmistakably, beyond human explanation. If Jesus had been born to an ordinary couple in an ordinary way, doubt would always linger. But God removed that option.

Through the virgin birth, God stepped into human history with unmistakable authority. He didn’t just send a message—He performed a miracle. And in doing so, He gave the world a Savior whose arrival still calls us to marvel, to believe, and to recognize the supernatural hand of God at work among us.
