The Excellent Prophet

The prophet Daniel is sometimes called a “flawless” prophet—not because he was without sin, but because Scripture records none of his moral failures. Like every human, Daniel needed God’s mercy, yet his life consistently reflected faithfulness, courage, and integrity in a world hostile to his God.

Taken captive as a young man, Daniel’s faith was tested early. Stripped of his homeland, culture, and freedom, he refused to let captivity steal his devotion. He resolved in his heart to honor the Lord, whether through dietary convictions, daily prayer, or humble obedience. His faith was not loud or boastful, but steady and unyielding.

Daniel’s boldness did not go unnoticed. God gave him wisdom, insight, and understanding that surpassed those around him. Even pagan kings recognized that something was different about him—Scripture calls it “an excellent spirit.” That excellence was not self-made; it was the fruit of a life aligned with God.

Through evil plots and political jealousy, Daniel remained faithful. When prayer became illegal, he prayed anyway with his windows open to the world. When obedience to God meant being thrown to hungry lions, he trusted God completely. The Lord shut the lions’ mouths, not merely to rescue Daniel, but to reveal His own power and glory.

God also entrusted Daniel with visions—glimpses of future kingdoms and the end of days. These revelations were weighty and often troubling, yet Daniel responded with humility, prayer, and reverence. He did not seek fame from prophecy; he sought understanding from God.

Daniel’s life reminds us that steady faithfulness to God leaves a powerful witness…even your enemies may seek to promote you! May we, like Daniel, live with an excellent spirit—faithful in the ordinary, courageous in trials, and steadfast until the end.

  2. Amen! My church is doing a fast right now modeled after Daniel’s ten days of eating no choice foods from the royal table. We are praying that God will do great things in our church and in our lives over the next year. Have a blessed day, Eric.
