The Flood of Sin

“So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.”
Isaiah 59:19

There are many kinds of floods.
Spilling a glass of milk at dinnertime will flood the table.
A garden hose left on will flood the flowerbed and the yard.
A plugged up toilet will overflow and flood the bathroom…gross, huh?

That’s because it’s supposed to be. The first two examples we can deal with. Just wipe up the spilled milk (no use crying over it) and turn off the garden hose. Easy!

The last one is gross for obvious reasons. You don’t want to get near it, touch it, step in it, or even look at it.

That’s how we should react to the flood of sin in this world. We should view it as an overflowing, disgusting, putrid toilet.

The enemy has come in like a flood.
The things that a moral people should be flushing OUT OF society are being allowed to flood society.

A discerning Christian alive today should be on high-alert and well aware of the enemy at work all around him.

But a sleeping saint is stumbling through life with only the thought of pleasing himself, and is soon wallowing in the putrid, disgusting floodwaters of sin.

Moreover, many Christians now tolerate and even enjoy the very sins their Bibles warn against being involved with.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our example for Christian conduct, now more than ever. He set the perfect example of obedience and righteousness for every believer to follow.

We also have the standard of God’s Word, the blaring siren and neon sign that warns us to steer clear of the devil’s filthy floodwaters. The Scriptures are a roadmap to keep us from the stinking swamp of sin.

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11)

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (1 John 14:15)

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

These verses used to be “Christianity 101”, but are now considered “strong preaching”, intolerant, and judgmental. That’s only because many in the church have adapted to life in the devil’s septic tank of sin...and many won’t stand against sin because they tolerate it and enjoy it.

Resist the flood of sin, saints. We’re called to take up our cross, follow Christ, and obey God’s Word. We’re NOT called to tolerate sin, but to be God’s standard-bearers in this sin-flooded world.
