Surviving the Flood

“Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.”

Luke 6:47-48

In today’s verse, Jesus lists three criteria you must meet in order withstand a flood of trouble in your life:

1) “Whosoever cometh to me…”
Do you go to the Lord on a regular basis? What does that look like? It should look like prayer, and the prayer should be dynamic.

Your prayer life should be productive and growing. The truth is, we must know the Lord personally and talk to Him regularly, just like you would with a human relationship.

People develop friendships.
Friends become good friends.
Good friends become best friends.
Best friends become lifelong friends.
Cherish your relationship and prayer time with the Lord. Protect it and develop it wholeheartedly, as you would with a lifelong friend.

2) “Whosoever heareth my sayings…” Are you reading your Bible?
If you’re not, why on earth not? Start.
If you are, the Holy Spirit should be actively leading you into all truth which you can apply to your daily walk.

If you want a firm foundation of faith that will withstand the enemy’s flood, then regularly sit under the preaching of the Word, preferably in person.
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Romans 10:17

3) “Whosoever doeth my sayings…” Do you obey God? Anybody can learn the Christian lingo and “talk the talk”, but only you and God know if you actually “walk the walk”.

It’s important to walk as a Christian because we each have a job to do. The Christian life isn’t about sitting in church on Sunday and just being a nice person.
The Christian life is warfare, and God expects us to be dressed for battle and ready to do what He wants, and when He wants it done.

If you’re not being hit by a flood in your life, the time is coming when it will happen. When it does, you’ll be prepared and stand firm if you’ve obeyed Luke 6:47-48.

The alternative? Ignore Christ, neglect prayer, and let your Bible get dusty on a shelf…then run around lost like a helpless, headless chicken when floodwaters rise against you.

Better to avoid the chicken routine and follow the advice of Christ instead: seek God in prayer, spend time in the Word, and stay obedient to the Lord.
