“I’ll have just enough for me, please.”

“Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:”
Proverbs 30:8

This is an excellent prayer.
Let’s break it down.

“Remove vanity far from me.”
This godless world is full of vanity, which is to say, emptiness. Our society celebrates empty, meaningless things like celebrity status, fashion trends, popularity, and materialism.

How do you know if something is empty and meaningless?
If Jesus promoted it, it’s meaningful.
If Jesus shunned it, it’s meaningless.

“Give me neither poverty, nor riches.”
Poverty is hard. I’ve lived in poverty and never want to live there again.
I can empathize with those who are very poor.
Riches are a different animal. It’s a very disciplined person who can handle wealth without compromising their character.

My prayer? I ask for enough to  accomplish His will, but not so much that I forget His will.

“Feed me with food convenient for me.”
God knows exactly WHAT we need, and exactly WHEN we need it.
Our culture is trained to consume everything in sight, but God desires that we seek Him for our needs.

“Heavenly Father, I ask you to cleanse me from the emptiness of this world. The pressure to worship the idols of Babylon is all around us.
I ask you to give me strength to run this race like Christ, with integrity and truth, not in vanity and lies.

“Father, I trust you to provide my every NEED, not my every WANT.
But whatever you choose to give me, let me have the discipline and good character to manage it well, as a good steward should.”

Father, I know you’ll feed me whatever is best suited for me, whether physically or spiritually. Help me to not covet someone else’s blessings.
Keep my eyes on those things you’re preparing for ME.
Lead me and feed me. I ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”
