When Pharaoh Got Offended

“The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.”
Exodus 15:9

The devil can work most easily in those who have been offended.

Pharaoh refused to let the Hebrew slaves leave Egypt, so God sent 10 plagues to change his mind…but he refused to yield until the last plague.

Afterward, Pharaoh looked around at his shattered kingdom and his blood began to boil thinking about those plagues.

What had God done?
(Exodus 7-12)

1) The river turned to blood, and every water vessel also poured out blood. The fish died and were left to rot and stink on the riverbanks.
2) Frogs came upon the land, invading every home including beds and kitchens. They died and were piled into stinking heaps.
3) The dust became as gnats, and they crawled upon all the people and the animals. Sound fun?
4) A plague of flies came into Egypt and the swarms were so heavy that “the land was ruined by them.” Flies spread disease.
5) God plagued all Egyptian livestock until they died. No more steak or milk anywhere…except in the land of Goshen where the Hebrews lived.
6) God caused a plague of boils to break out on all the people and animals in Egypt…imagine having shingles, only 10x worse.
7) A plague of hail came crashing into Egypt, destroying the crops and every person and animal that was not under shelter.
8) Then came the locusts. Whatever the hail hadn’t destroyed, the locusts finished off, eating every crop, field, and garden.
9) Next came the plague of darkness. Not so bad, eh? Well, try that with all of the other plagues stacked against you. Egypt was so black that torches could not penetrate the darkness…except in Goshen, where God’s people lived.
10) Last plague. Pharaoh was too stubborn to humble himself and release the Hebrew slaves, so God smote every firstborn son in Egypt, including the son of Pharaoh himself.

And so, Pharaoh raced out and pursued the Hebrews to (and through) the parted Red Sea, fully intending to exact painful, bloody revenge.

That’s Satan. He wants humanity to suffer and die.
Why? Because HE is going to suffer and die…and misery loves company.

But God will flick him into the lake of fire just as quickly as the Red Sea crashed down on Pharaoh’s chariot army.

Lessons for Christians?
Don’t let offenses drive you mad. Forgive people quickly, give it to God, and move forward in obedience to the Lord. In short, you can let it go.

Lessons for evildoers?
You’ll never destroy God.
And you’re fools to attack His people.
He knows how to deliver justice with overwhelming force.

  1. I’m reading a great book that talks about the danger of taking offense. It’s called, “The Bait of Satan” by John Bevere.
The author’s premise is just as you said—whenever we choose to be offended, the devil has an opening.
    Great post, brother! Thank you.

    1. I’ve been around this dynamic for years…even in my own family. People get offended, stew on it, then get angry and do something harmful. (Hurting people hurt other people)

God bless you, sister Nancy! Have a blessed day!
