Lawn Maintenance

When we moved into our home in 2023, the previous owner’s had let much of the house and property fall into disrepair…including the lawn. To be more blunt, nobody had lifted a finger to care for the lawn. My neighbor told me he had tried to help them get it under control, but the people just didn’t care.

We have a third-acre of lawn, and if it wasn’t dry and dying, it was infested with clover, ground ivy (“creeping Charlie”), and crabgrass. There were white grubs eating the roots of the good grass, and there were moles burrowing tunnels everywhere, enjoying the abundant grubs. It was a real mess.

My neighbor put me to shame with his beautiful green lawn, but he never shamed me for having issues with my own. Instead, he came alongside us, offering great advice and ways to help the health of our lawn. Unlike the previous owners, I actually listened to his wisdom and advice.

I rolled up my sleeves, bought a broadcast spreader, and began treating the lawn with various weed killer granules, grub killer granules, and lawn feed granules. I also purchased a dozen “poison grubs” to discreetly handle the moles. No more moles, no more tunnels.

Grass seed was added to bare patches, and water was sprinkled on the lawn during dry spells. I really learned a lot about grass, weeds, and lawn maintenance. Things have come a long way, and lately I’ve just been doing “crabgrass cleanup”, hand pulling any and all crabgrass clumps that I find. So far, I’ve pulled (6) five -gallon pails worth of that nasty weed.

I’m thankful for wise people in my life who have taken time to help me through times of trial. Lawns picture the Christian life, and “good neighbors” are faithful saints who help us stay spiritually healthy, weedless, and pest-free. It’s hard work restoring and maintaining a healthy Christian walk, but totally worth it!

Today, our lawn is growing thick and green!

  4. Pulling weeds is cathartic, as is overcoming sinful habits. Thank you for the easily understood comparison you’ve made. We have a neighbor whose house will soon be consumed by giant weeds, overgrown rhododendruns, and tree-like bushes. I pray his soul isn’t in the same condition! 🙂

  6. Great analogy, Eric. I’m so thankful for the many people who’ve come alongside me over the decades, offering their wisdom and encouragement. I pray to do the same for those God now brings into my life.
