“If You Love Me…”

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
John 14:15

Do I love Jesus? Yes.
Is it hard to keep His commandments?
It can be.

Jesus of Nazareth shook up the world because He was perfect. He was a perfect man walking in the midst of a sinful society.
He lived perfectly.
He spoke perfectly.
He thought perfectly.
He responded perfectly.

But beyond that:
He LOVED perfectly.
He CARED perfectly.
He was a perfect friend.
He had perfect priorities.
He had a perfect perspective.

And He gave those who would follow Him some perfect commandments:

“Love one another.”
John 13:34-35

“Pray for your enemies.”
Matthew 5:44-45

“Repent.”
Matthew 4:17

“Believe that Jesus is God.”
John 14:11

“Take up your cross and follow Jesus.”
Matthew 16:24-25

“Go make disciples.”
Matthew 28:18-20

“Pray always.”
Luke 21:36

That’s just a handful of commands, but that’s a heavy handful for any Christian to handle.
Those are not suggestions from Jesus, those are commandments…not because He’s a hard taskmaster (He isn’t), and not because he wants you to be a religious robot.

Jesus Christ had a perfect perspective of the spiritual battlefield on earth.
Like a Commander, He surveyed the battlefield and determined what were the necessary disciplines that His soldiers needed to have ACTIVE in their lives in order to survive and THRIVE.

If you love Jesus Christ, then keep His commandments.
Do what He asked you to do.
Trust and obey His perfect wisdom and you’ll have more peace, joy, and victory in life.

  1. As I read your post, I’m shaking my head in agreement, but I know that it is impossible to be perfect like Jesus. So, I will keep trying every day to be more like Him, following His commands, and praying for grace when I fall short.

  2. “Go make disciples” is a tough one-not that any of them are easy! That’s the only one where you have to “reach out to others” to try to open up their minds and hearts to our Lord Jesus Christ. You do it well, Eric.
