Joseph was apprehensive about Mary being his wife…she was pregnant with a child that wasn’t his in a society which frowned upon such things. Joseph, did you know that you’d be placed in such a predicament?
Why should I have to endure the ridicule and shame of caring for Mary and a baby that isn’t even mine? Do I really want this to be my life? Why is this happening to me? What has happened to Mary? I thought that I knew her!
Well, these are the things that I would think if I had been in Joseph’s shoes. But the beautiful thing about the Lord is that He knows all things, including how his plans for us will affect those closest to us.
So, just as God sent an angel to Mary to reassure her that this miraculous pregnancy was of God, he also sent a special message to Joseph. An angel in a dream encouraged him to still take Mary as his wife. That’s just what he needed to hear. Joseph stepped up and took care of Mary.
My friend, God has plans for you AND those closest to you. If you stay close to the Lord and follow His lead, your life will mesh with those around you who also walk with the Lord. Joseph and Mary were “reading from the same page” as they delivered Christ Jesus into this world.
How do relationships, homes, and churches stay strong? They read from the same script and follow it wholeheartedly. Our script is Scripture.

How blessed Mary and Joseph were, Almighty God sent His top angel (Gabriel) to assure them of His Holy presence and intentions. And as you highlight well, how important it is that they (and us) read from the same Scripture written by His Holy Spirit. I wonder how familiar Joseph was with the Old Testament and if he had connected His relationship with Mary to Isaiah 7:14 (NASB) “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him Immanuel.” Great reflections, Eric! 🙂

I wonder the same thing! I think about that and equate it with Jews today who have so many prophecies pointing to Christ AND the life of Christ fulfilling them…and yet they refuse to believe.
I have to believe that Mary and Joseph were clued in more and more as their life with Jesus unfolded.
