Quite a Grip

I remember when I was a kid my Dad had a really strong grip. He worked with his hands a lot: using hand tools, running chainsaws, climbing, etc.

One of those “father son” things that we used to do involved him sticking out his hand for a handshake and saying “squeeze”. I’d grab his hand as hard as I could and squeeze, grunting and writhing to get a reaction out of him…which I didn’t, of course.

And then HE would squeeze MY hand, and I would quickly shout “Owww…OK!” as he chuckled.

Then I started getting older and my hands started getting strong. I was a drummer, a mountain biker, a wood-hauling country kid, and I became obsessed with using hand springs to build a strong grip.

Around age 17 or 18, my hands were as strong or stronger than Dad’s, and our “squeeze game” challenges usually ended in a healthy draw, with both of us wincing.

Picture the strongest human hands you’ve ever known…now consider them weak in comparison to God’s hands. Our mighty God has a grip that no man or devil can ever match or beat.

In John 10:28, Jesus is telling the unbelieving Jews that He has an eternal grip that will never let go of his sheep. What Jesus purchased with His blood, He took hold of and will never let go…that’s us!

My Christian friend, your Savior has the strongest grip in this world and the next…and He’s holding on to you tightly. May you rejoice (and may the devil wince) in that fact today!

  1. I remember trying to arm wrestle my dad too, and never winning 😊 But God’s hold of us is the strongest hold of them all – there is no more secure place for you and me Eric. God bless you today brother 🙏

    1. Ahh yes, I remember arm wrestling Dad too…and losing until I was in my twenties.😆

You are correct, God is the ultimate bodyguard, strongman, and protective father we could ever hope for!
God bless you brother Alan, thank you for being an encouragement to me today, my friend!

  2. I am so thankful for God’s grip on me!

When I think of a man with a good grip, I think of my nephew who is a contractor and all-around handyman. Since he works with his hands every day, they are HUGE! I remember when my daughter’s boyfriend came to pick her up for a date, my nephew happened to be at the house doing some work for us. He shook the boyfriend’s hand and just gripped him tightly as he said, “You’d better take good care of my cousin.” I’m certain he got his message across.

Also, when I was growing up, we had a large oil painting of just the hands of Jesus reaching out. I would sit in front of it and imagine God holding me in his firm but loving grip. Such a powerful reminder!

    1. That’s great, I’m sure that boyfriend got the point loud and clear! Love to see men in a protective role where they should be.👍🏻

Your oil painting 🖼️ is a great reminder of His strong hands…do you still have that painting?

      1. Yes, that boyfriend is now her husband! He is also a wonderful son-in-law.

I don’t know what happened to the oil painting. My parents have been gone now for almost ten years. Either one of my brothers has it, or it was donated.

Hey, have you ever heard the song “Gonna Have to Trust You” by Stephen Stanley? When it pops up on my Spotify playlist, it shows a graphic of man rising through the dark clouds towards the hands of God, reaching toward him from Heaven. I love that image!

  3. My dad was 5’6 and about 165 pounds, but had ham-sized hands and a gorilla 🦍 grip. I can still feel my medium sized adult hand basically disappearing when we shook hands. Thanks for the reminder that God’s grip is even stronger.
