Back in the early 2000’s, I began to notice a trend forming in society…at least in my city. When I noticed it, I shared it with some family members with a chuckle. Then they told me that they had seen the very same thing in their towns. What was this new, oddly comical trend that had us laughing and scratching our heads?
People were wearing their pajamas in public.
I’d be pushing my cart at the local grocery store, inspecting the vegetables and see one coming toward me: a young man in his twenties trudging through the produce section wearing SpongeBob pajama bottoms and dirty sandals.
There is a humorous slogan often seen on t-shirts and bumper stickers that says, “I’m out of bed and dressed, what more do you want?”
But when I’d see these (mostly younger) people wearing pajamas and clomping through the store they had the expression “At least I’m wearing pajamas, I don’t care what you think.” I rarely see such individuals smiling, chin up, shoulders back, and moving with purpose. Usually they’re slouched and shuffling aimlessly through a store…and sometimes I’ve wondered if they’re actually sleepwalking. (That will preach.)
I grew up with the crazy discipline that if you left the house and entered society, you put real clothes on. Even if it was for a quick “sick run” to the pharmacy, actual pants and shoes were in order. Today, society is so lackadaisical when it comes to “being presentable”. Many have forgotten that we should walk, talk, and look our best, if only out of basic self-respect.
We’re all going to wear something today if we get out of our houses. The world may not care if it’s pajamas, a polka-dotted life vest, a neon hazmat suit with purple flippers, or a hairy brown gorilla suit…but God cares. And more important than our outward clothing, we who are Christians should remember that we’re wearing Christ for the world to see. He should be clearly featured in our modest dress, polite conduct, and good manners.
We don’t do this solely out of self-respect or as a religious action…we “wear Jesus Christ well” out of respect for our great God. The world will get more and more sloppy, disorderly, and unkempt without Godly order. I’m glad that there are still Christians who desire to give God their best every single day.
What the world sees on our outside today is a reflection of what is happening on the inside. So if Christ is happening on the inside, then…you get the idea.😉
To be continued…

Excellent point about wearing Christ for the world to see, may we do so with confidence! God bless you today brother Eric 🙏

A great reminder! The world is always watching, whether we realize it or not. I’m still not used to seeing people wearing their pajamas or yoga gear to the grocery store. May we be the light and salt in the world.

I agree, I’m not sure I will ever find that normal…😆
Have a blessed day Heather!

Your message rings true for school children, too. They tend to have more respect for teachers and take their education more seriously when they have uniform/clothing regulations. And I’m not even going to delve into what people wear to church, weddings, and funerals! Wonderful message, Eric. 🙂

That’s true…my wife is a Christian school teacher and the introduction of uniforms helped instill some discipline.👍🏻👍🏻
