Who Made This Mess?

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
1 John 1:8

One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen is a home video that shows a person walking through a home where the kitchen garbage is ripped up and scattered.
As they move into the living room, they see garbage strewn and smeared on the furniture.

Moving down the hallway, the person begins saying,
“Who did this?”
“Who made this mess?”

And then they enter the bedroom, where the bed is littered with wrappers and smeared with food residue…and who do we see cowering in the corner, afraid to even look at the one who just walked into the room?

Guilty dog.
Shaking under the conviction of his wrongdoing.
Terrified that he’s been busted.
Worried about what comes next.
The jig is up, and he knows it.
Party is over. Goose is cooked.

That’s the mark of a healthy conscience. Guilt is actually the mark of a good dog...a bad dog wouldn’t really care.

If people would have that reaction to their sin, we would have a better society.
But people scatter the garbage and spread the filth of their sins and then make excuses for why it’s justified.
Either that, or they flat out deny their actions are sinful.

Look around at the world.
Who made this mess?
Who did this?

We all had a part to play at some point, the question is this:
Are you the one making messes, blaming others for their messes, or cleaning up your own messes?
If you say you never make a mess, you deceive yourself, and the truth is not in you.

Without God, life is messy.
Without repentance, we’re filthy.

Today is a good day to repent to God for any sin mess we’ve made…why live life as a guilty dog?

Keep your armor on, friends.

  1. This is incidental for me regarding this morning, a guy walked straight across my path in the mall and nearly knocked me down. When I challenged him he just laughed – he had no conscience. As children of a Holy God may we be open to our conscience and repent when necessary. God bless you today brother Eric 🙏

  2. Love that picture and the analogy! Yes, we all make messes with our sin. May we confess and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus daily. I also pray this verse: “Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.” Psalm 19:12

  3. Yesterday my daughter’s silver lab ate a loaf of freshly baked zucchini bread off her kitchen counter. She steals food often. She shows some guilt but not enough to overcome temptation. Children are like that until they mature and understand that the gravity of sin isn’t just about disappointing their parents. I thoroughly enjoyed your post, Eric. 🙂
