The Devil Came Calling

“And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”

Matthew 4:9-10

The temptation in the wilderness.
Jesus Christ had just been baptized, and the Spirit of the Lord led him into the wilderness for a season of fasting and prayer.

Jesus was approached by Satan.
Satan was watching Jesus Christ.

You and I talk about “battling the devil” and “fighting against Satan”, but the truth is that we’re probably battling some lower level minions in Satan’s demonic army.

Not Jesus.
He drew the attention of the devil himself because he was the only One who stood a chance of crushing the prince of darkness.

The Prince of Peace came to destroy the works of the devil.
(1 John 3:8)

And in the midst of a forty day fast, the devil figured Jesus was now weak and hungry enough to sell Himself for some bread to eat and the treasures of the world.

How did Jesus respond?
He reminded Satan of God…that it was His duty to worship and obey ONLY God.
Brilliant…because there was a time when Satan’s job was to lead the worship of God in heaven, but his pride led to his rebellion and getting booted from heaven.

Jesus reminded the devil that he should have stayed on God’s side…and all his pride and rebellion was about to fail forever.

“Get thee hence, Satan.”

DailyArmor translation…
“Beat it, devil, you’ve already lost.”

Don’t give away your testimony.
Satan lost everything that day forever and ever…thanks to Jesus Christ.

The devil came calling and our Champion answered the door and knocked him back off the porch.

That’s our Jesus!

  1. Thank you Eric, for sharing this valuable reminder of our enemy Satan operates. All scripture is important, but this account is worthy of long study. It is worth seeing how Satan misuses and misquotes God’s Word, just as he did in the garden with Eve. God bless you today brother 🙏

  2. What a great reminder to use our sword (Word of God) to defeat the enemy! How devious that the devil attacks you when you are weak…tired, hungry, overwhelmed. I need to remember to pray for God’s strength in those moments.

    1. Funny you mention that Heather…I was just thinking about how vulnerable we are in times of lack and weakness, but equally as vulnerable during times of plenty when we can let our guards down and get proud or lackadaisical.

Thankful that the Lord set the example for both instances! Have a blessed day!
