Hard Times Create Strong Men

“Hard times create strong men,” wrote Michael Hopf—and Paul the Apostle drives it home even harder: “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Cor. 16:13–14).

That’s not a soft suggestion. It’s a command.

We’re living in a culture that often confuses weakness with virtue. The phrase “toxic masculinity” gets thrown around so broadly that it can end up targeting any man who refuses to be passive, who leads, who takes responsibility, or who stands firm when it would be easier to fold. Of course, there is such a thing as abusive or selfish behavior—but strength itself isn’t the problem. Abdication is.

Scripture doesn’t call men to be timid, confused, or led by the shifting winds of culture. It calls them to be watchful—awake, alert, aware. It calls them to stand firm—not bending every time pressure rises. It calls them to act like men—not boys chasing comfort, but men carrying responsibility.

And yes, it calls them to love. But biblical love is not soft indulgence. It is costly. It tells the truth, protects, and sacrifices. It stays when things get hard…because love is the ultimate motivator and serving God and family is the ultimate mission.

If the world feels unstable, that’s because it is. Nations are fighting nations, violence is on the rise, and major economies are facing recession and depression. And in these unstable times, passive and spineless men don’t steady anything. Faithful, grounded, courageous men do. We need men who know what they believe, who lead their families with conviction, who aren’t ashamed of the gospel, and who won’t outsource their responsibility to someone else.

Hard times are coming and already here for many. How do we prepare? The same way you would if a hurricane were approaching your home. We must shore up our homes, bring awareness to our loved ones, make contingency plans, become as physically fit as possible (always good advice), shed those besetting sins, and determine by Gods grace to be strong in the coming storm.

Men, if you’re reading this, God wants to make you a pillar of spiritual strength in the hard times ahead…because weak men cannot last long in any storm. You have a purpose and God wants to make you stronger and more courageous than you ever thought possible.
